Pharmacy Organizations Request DEA Update Registration Process for Pharmacists to Reflect State Law Changes
NASPA, along with several other pharmacy organizations, sent a letter to the DEA requesting that the DEA promptly update its online registration system and the Mid-Level Practitioners Authorization by State table to align with recent state legislative and regulatory changes expanding pharmacists’ prescriptive authority for controlled substances. States including Colorado, Iowa, Nevada, North Dakota, and Oregon now explicitly permit pharmacists to prescribe, administer, and dispense certain controlled substances under their scope of practice. However, outdated DEA records are creating barriers that prevent pharmacists from registering and fully exercising their authority, especially in providing access to opioid use disorder treatments. The organizations stress the need for annual updates to federal records to match state laws, ensuring pharmacists can deliver critical patient care without administrative obstacles.
