Point-of-care test and treat empowers clinicians to use effective, fast technology to aid their decision making at the “point-of-care” to improve patient health.

Pharmacy-based point-of-care testing utilizes CLIA-waived (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments -waived) tests that offer near immediate results in non-laboratory settings. Pharmacists are increasingly offering this public health service of test and treat to promote prevention, early detection, and disease management.

Activity Description

Our NASPA Pharmacy-based Point-of-Care Test & Treat Certificate Programs provide an opportunity to gain the skills and information necessary to develop a testing program. The target audience for the certificate program is pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, student pharmacists, academia, and pharmacy association staff. While our programs are primarily designed for pharmacists, non-pharmacists interested in point-of-care test and treat are also welcome. We have multiple certificate programs available, each tailored to best meet your specific needs.

 

  • The NASPA Pharmacy-based Point-of-Care Test & Treat National Certificate Program provides an opportunity to gain the skills and information necessary to develop a testing program such as influenza, Group A Streptococcus, HIV, Hepatitis C, and chronic diseases. The 20-hour ACPE-accredited certificate program includes comprehensive material regarding key disease states, physical assessment, point-of-care tests and treatment, and business models through 16 hours of home study and 4 hours of live training.

  • The NASPA Pharmacy-Based Point-of-Care Test & Treat Respiratory Certificate Program is a targeted 8-hour program that focuses on the management and assessment of commonly encountered respiratory conditions such as influenza, Respiratory Syncytial Virus, coronaviruses and pharyngitis. Through 6 hours of home study and 2 hours of live training, pharmacists will gain essential skills to effectively serve their communities by addressing prevalent respiratory health needs.

  • The NASPA/FPA Pharmacy-based Point-of-Care Test & Treat Florida Certificate Program is designed to meet Florida’s unique test & treat requirements. This program equips participants with the skills and information necessary to develop a test and treat program for minor, nonchronic health conditions, such as influenza, Group A Streptococcus, and minor, uncomplicated infections, within the framework of an established written protocol with a supervising physician. The 20-hour ACPE-accredited certificate program includes comprehensive material regarding key disease states, physical assessment, point-of-care tests and treatment, and business models through 12 hours of home study and 8 hours of live training.

NOTE: The National program and Respiratory program do not meet Florida’s requirements for Test & Treat. If you are a Florida pharmacist, please refer to the NASPA/FPA Pharmacy-based Point-of-Care Test & Treat Florida Certificate Program.

Each program requires participants to take an online assessment after each of the modules of home study, in addition to a cumulative assessment (must pass 70% within three attempts), and then their proficiency to conduct physical assessments and offer point-of-care testing services is assessed in the live/virtual training.

Upon successful completion of both portions of the program and all program evaluations, participants are awarded a certificate of completion and pharmacists can receive Continuing Pharmacy Education (CPE) credit.

Enrollment

To get started, please register for the NASPA Pharmacy-Based Point-of-Care Test & Treat Certificate Program of your choice through an authorized provider.

Once you have registered for the course, that provider will send you a link that can used to access the online training platform, Lecture Panda. This will give you access to course materials, including self-study readings and an evaluation prior to the live/virtual portion of the course.

Course Instruction for Student Pharmacists

Schools and colleges of pharmacy across the country are incorporating the NASPA Pharmacy-based Point-of-Care Test & Treat National Certificate Program into the PharmD curriculum. The POCT&T certificate program provides students with the practice-based knowledge to assess and test patients for infectious diseases – a skillset employers are increasingly seeking as they expand pharmacy services.

NASPA’s POCT&T certificate program is typically provided as a one credit hour elective or requirement and is proving popular among students in the pharmacy schools currently offering it. The program is turn-key: We provide a sample syllabus and administrative support to faculty through our website where the online home study for the program is housed. Costs are minimal.
