For Florida Pharmacists and Student Pharmacists

Point-of-care testing empowers clinicians to use effective, fast technology to aid their decision making at the “point-of-care” to improve patient health. Pharmacy-based point-of-care testing utilizes CLIA-waived (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments -waived) tests that offer near immediate results in non-laboratory settings.  Pharmacists and pharmacies are increasingly offering this public health service to promote prevention, early detection, and disease management.

Registered Providers Agreements (RPAs), allowing organizations to host their own trainings, are now available!  For more information, reach us at education@naspa.us.

Activity Description

The NASPA/FPA Pharmacy-based Point-of-Care Test & Treat Certificate Program provides an opportunity to gain the skills and information necessary to develop a test and treat program for minor, nonchronic health conditions, such as influenza, Group A Streptococcus, and minor, uncomplicated infections, within the framework of an established written protocol with a supervising physician. The target audience for the certificate program is pharmacists, student pharmacists, schools and colleges of pharmacy, and pharmacy association staff. While the program is primarily designed for pharmacists, non-pharmacists interested in point-of-care testing are also welcome to complete the program.

The 20-hour certificate program includes comprehensive material regarding key disease states, physical assessment, point-of-care tests, collaborative practice models, and business models through:

  • 12 hours of home study
  • 8 hours of live training

Participants take an online assessment after each of the 7 modules of home study. In addition, there is a  cumulative assessment (must pass 70% within three attempts). Participant’s proficiency to conduct screening and physical assessments and offer point-of-care test and treat services is assessed in the live/virtual training. Upon successful completion of both portions of the program and all program evaluations, participants are awarded a certificate of completion and pharmacists can receive 20 hours of Continuing Pharmacy Education (CPE) credit.

Enrollment

To get started, please register for the NASPA/FPA Pharmacy-Based Point-of-Care Test & Treat Certificate Program through an authorized provider. Once you have registered for the course, that provider will send you a link that can be used to access the online training platform, Lecture Panda. This will give you access to course materials, including self-study readings and an evaluation prior to the live/virtual portion of the course.

Course Instruction for Student Pharmacists

We encourage schools and colleges of pharmacy in Florida to incorporate the NASPA/FPA Pharmacy-based Point-of-Care Test & Treat Certificate Program into the PharmD curriculum. The POCT&T certificate program provides students with the practice-based knowledge to assess, test or screen for and treat patients for minor, nonchronic health conditions – a skillset employers are increasingly seeking as they expand pharmacy services.

The POCT&T Certificate Program is typically provided as a one credit hour elective or requirement and is proving popular among students in the pharmacy schools currently offering POCT education. The program is turn-key: We provide administrative support to faculty for our website where the online home study for the program is housed. Costs are minimal.

Please check our “Upcoming Trainings” page for available dates and locations. If no dates and locations are convenient, a trainer may be available to come to your location. Additional fees, including travel and materials apply. If you are interested, please email education@naspa.us.
