CDC Releases National Diabetes Prevention Program Pharmacy Campaign

Eighty-four million American adults have prediabetes. The National DPP is a partnership of public and private organizations working together to build the infrastructure for nationwide delivery of an evidence-based lifestyle change program for adults with prediabetes to prevent or delay onset of type 2 diabetes.

The CDC-approved curriculum incorporates regular opportunities for direct interaction between the lifestyle coach and participant, builds peer support, and focuses on behavior modification through healthy eating, increasing physical activity, and managing stress.

The CDC is asking for assistance to make community pharmacists aware of the National DPP, help them understand the program’s benefits for their patients and pharmacy, and motivate them to take action. The ultimate goal is to encourage pharmacists to download, read, and adopt one or more of the tiers from the Action Guide for Community Pharmacists.

The Action Guide for Community Pharmacists will make it easier for pharmacists to participate in the National DPP in one of the following ways:

  • Tier 1: Promote awareness of prediabetes and the National DPP among patients at risk
  • Tier 2: Screen, test, and refer patients
  • Tier 3: Offer the National DPP lifestyle change program

The CDC has created several promotional materials, including three videos, brochures, postcards, and a continuing education webinar, to promote the guide and encourage pharmacists to get involved with the National DPP. Additionally, the CDC will be utilizing their strong social media presence to further engage the targeted pharmacist audience.
