Walgreens to Train Pharmacy Staff in Mental Health First Aid

Walgreens, in a partnership with the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) and the National Council of Behavioral Health (NCBH), has launched a training program for their pharmacists to better identify the warning signs of mental health and substance abuse problems.  The online program, adapted from a program developed in 2001 in Australia, is a 4-hour interactive course.  During the course, pharmacists will learn to deal with various scenarios involving their patients experiencing a mental health or substance abuse disorder.

“With the growing need for services and resources to help those living with mental health conditions, as well as substance use and addiction, we can play an important role by giving our pharmacists and certain team members the training to help those in crisis,” says Alex Gourlay, Walgreens’ co-chief operating officer.
