The Unsung Role of the Pharmacist in Patient Health

With the number of prescription medications increasing in the older population, a recent JAMA study looked into utilizing pharmacists to educate patients on medications that may be inappropriate for them and recommend their physician deprescribe.  In the study, pharmacists gave both patients and their physicians educational materials, and were paid for this service.  After six months, 43% of the study’s patients stopped taking one of the selected medications in the targeted drug classes, compared to just 12% of the control group.  The accessibility of pharmacists, as well as their knowledge of the full list of medications a patient is taking, was noted as the main benefit of involving pharmacists in deprescribing.
